Both, cataclysm that is a catalyst causes change.
Or like Y2K, it will come and go and nothing will happen.

2012 was/is just a significant numerical occurrence to the Mayans, just as 2000 was to Christian doomsters, and it’s not 2012 using their calendar.
As to whether anything will change then (from the point of the end of times etc.)? Then rest assured it probably won’t happen in 2012, I am going to need at least 15-20 years before I am ready to unveil my plans to the world!

2012 is too early for any cataclysm. There are no asteroids on the horizons that will hit the earth and global warming won’t cause any mass destruction until at least 2020.
I think the Mayans needed to extend their calendar a few years.

I was asking the same question. I think something wonderful is going to happen, though it could be a huge change as we all know it. Change is always scary at first.

The following predictions are theories based upon sources of varying origin and credibility. Many of these theories rely upon a decent amount of conjecture, and should therefore not be considered to be facts.
The Olduvai cliff will begin and permanent blackouts will occur worldwide, according to “The Peak of World Oil Production and the Road To The Olduvai Gorge” by Richard C. Duncan. (Good story by the way!)

December 21 – End of the great cycle of the Maya calendar’s Long Count and a 26,000 year planetary cycle in the Aztec calendar, and thus the end of this Baktun (the end of the cycle is variously dated anywhere from December 21 to December 26 by some calculations).
Tibetan Monks specialising in remote viewing predict that divine extra-terrestrials will intervene at a point where the world’s governments are about to deploy weapons of mass destruction. The Biblical Code and Nostredamus have both said there is to be a comet in the year 2012. The Bible Code says though that we do have an opportunity to stop this comet.
… *No matter what the prophecy, it is clear that people have seen there will be a shift in time as humans know it. Most people will not survive it do to the simple fact that most people don’t care anymore. If the world continues at the rate it is going, no one will survive. People have to learn how to love and bond together in times of need. People will need to be able to help eachother and most people today could care less about their neighbor. Unless people learn kindness and put love in their hearts the “cataclysm” will end this world.
