There is a hypersonic shock wave generated by contact with the atmosphere. That will cause the asteroid to be slowed, and to lose some mass by the heat generated. The shock way well disintegrate the asteroid into small fragments, in a similar way to hitting a solid surface. But with no solid surface, the inner part of the asteroid may remain intact after it slows to sub-sonic speed. If so it will fall to the solid core of the planet.
