Can you feed a dove a different breed of bird food?

I work in a preschool and we have a dove as a new pet in our classroom. Do you need to feed it dove food or will other breeds of bird food work just as well (i.e. – finch, cockatiel, etc.). There are other breeds of birds in different classrooms, but I just wanted to make sure that this was safe to do for the health of the bird…I know dogs, but am a newbie with our feathered friends! THANK YOU!!

It should have it’s own kind of food. All birds eat what is best for their own breed cause they all have different nutritional needs. If you feed it something that is made for other kinds of birds it will not get the right nutrition it needs.

  4. birds all eat mostly the same things…i.e. “the early bird catches the worm”… it dosen’t say what type of bird does it ? Bugs, bread, seeds, and don’t forget the gravel, or the water.

  6. doves eat a mix of seeds milo red proso whats known as 32% they will eat bits of white bread not to often and apples oranges feed them in a shallow dish on the floor< thats where they like it>or just place it in a pile they will spread it around and put their water just about i inch off the floor, near the food . doves eat all day long off the ground and roost in low shrubs or small trees . if your box/cage is large enough provide a bush such as you would find along the dry areas of calif or put branches with alot of leaves for them ( fake ones are not good for them !!) place small boxes with one opened end for nests or arrange rocks ,limbs and wood into cubbys and leave some hay or dry leaves for them to make nests with the males have a bit of a pretteir look to them than the females who are dull in color have fun in your class

i raised over 36 kinds of birds and they totalled around 5000 last time i counted i raised birds for about 9 years until a year ago

Hi, It would be much cheaper to buy Dove Seeds or wild bird seeds, cockatiel seeds have seeds with shels which are harder to eat,

    I breed white doves,

Go to your local pet store that sells Kaytee products and ask for Dove food. Look at the link below for info.

Doves have differant nutritional requirements then other birds.

Doves can not shell sunflower seeds like cockatiels, so they can’t handle some of the bulk seeds that come in those mixes.

Dove food is a lot cheaper. You should be able to get a 50# bag of seed for under $25. The same size of a cheap cockatiel food costs over $35.

Is it a white dove? Want it be become a pink dove? That is what those colored pellets will do. They are healthy for doves but the dye gives you funny results.
