  1. Buffets, and whether you like or dislike them, are a matter of opinion, as are restauramnts, pizza, etc. There are some good buffets and there are bad, just like restaurants. What one likes, another doesn’t. I’ve found the best way to judge a restaurant, buffet, etc., etc. is to try it yourself, once. It’s pretty easy to judge the cleanliness, quality, and whether you like the restaurant or buffet.

Another item of consideration is how much you have/want to spend and how important quality & quantity are to you. I have eaten at quite a few expensive restaurants over the years(I’m 67), and I can only recall a few that were(in my opinion), worth the money I payed. On the other hand, I’ve eaten at quite a few buffets that I considered very good. If it’s a chain restaurant or buffet, many times, one location can be very good and another, very poor.

It pays to “shop around” like you do for many things and base your preferences on your experiences.

  3. Buffets are cheap only because your right, they never do serve quality food. I don’t like eating at them because I feel like im eating fake food, and you never know how long the food has been sitting out before you arrive, or who has touched it. yuck!

  4. I live in a local tourist town, Myrtle Beach, SC, and we have ALOT of restaurants. The Chinese is always horrible, the seafood buffets are somewhat disappointing, and the country buffets are scale-tipping. Although i do like the Arcadian Shores Golden Corral by 17 and 22. They are very clean, friendly, and always have a nice assortment of everything. And most of its pretty good. Its runs about i belive 10-18 a person. Lunch or Dinner. Seafood definitly has to be prepared just how you like it with your fav. garnishes. CHinese unless its homemade isn’t ever all that great. Sorry to ramble, hope this helps.

Maybe its just me but lately when we eat out for 15 to 20 dollar meals per person I dont believe they are worth that either. We went to chilis and my hubby and i both got up and said its not as good as it use to be.somethings different with all the places…Buffets arent as good because they put the fresh stuff on top of the old stuff and mix it together etc..no matter how long sitting out.Its like at the grocery store deli i cant stand things looking dried out ..UGH
I started trying one new recipe a week with my family to get them to try new things.(thai chinese, barbq things etc)

they make it at cheap price because they buy in bulk at like you get at sams, costco etc.
golden buffet was NOT that cheap last time we went it was over 10 a per person no way do my kids eat 10 worth of food.
we live at the beach though(fla)so maybe its just higher here than most.
i noticed olive gardens meals run about 12 to 15 per dish also…sons pizza is ten for like 6 inch to 8 inch.
hungry howies large is 5.55 not even as heavy as olive gardens.

I think it depends very much on the buffet. Chain restaurants like Hometown Buffet and Golden Corral don’t seem to be high quality food, but I’ve been to some buffets in Las Vegas where the food was incredible. There is also a buffet sushi place in San Francisco (Isobune) where the different dishes are sent around on boats (there is a moat in the middle of the restaurant and the sushi chefs work on an “island” in the middle of that.) and the food quality was very high.
So, I think you’re right when you say you get what you pay for. If you would expect to pay $25 for a good meal in a restaurant, find a $25 buffet and you’ll probably enjoy your meal.

The buffet foods are mediocre quality when it comes to freshness or taste.

Usually the foods have been sitting there for a few hours and when they bring out fresh food it is mixed in with the food that has been sitting there since 1990. The food is usually cooked in large volume and sometimes never properly cooked. I haven’t eaten at one in a few months because I always end up with diarrhea. Their is the possibility of little kids putting their little dirty hands on the food or somebody who has a cold and will cough on your food. I say it is best to eat at home or a sit down restaurant where the food is properly cooked.

I think the buffets I eat at do. They have fruit, variating stuff, etc. At one of the buffets, I always eat this shrimp with a good sauce on it. It’s my opinion

Most I’ve been to are nasty, esp. Old Country Buffet!!
The ones that are great are usually in finer hotels or nice restaurants.
Actually, some KFC’s have buffets and they are really good!
Try Google for reviews on buffets.

  10. They serve low quality food simply because they must keep the food cost low. Most people with budget concerns go to eat at buffets. No wonder the restaurants must keep their prices low and competitive…
They order from distributor who handles ‘second quality’ products, reserving the top quality ones for costly fancy restaurants.
Another point is that at buffets, the food just stays in the heater for hours, giving you dry and unfresh food.
    Hope this helps…

worked at a buffet for too long!
