The important thing is to have some money and basic assets w. no outstanding debt now as in the next stage of the cycle interest rates will rise inexorably to 16%.
In the UK your best bet is to be in local government fixed rent housing, if we come out the other side w/out having resorted to WW3 a little savings should buy enough cheap houses for the smart poor to become tomorrow’s landlords..

I envision a kind of Mad Max Thunderdome world if civilization folds up. There will be megadeaths from starvation and disease as cities burn from riots by citizens desperate for food or fuel. Governments will be impotent in the face of worldwide masses of people forming small ‘tribes’ or armies and taking what they can find by force and to heck with whomever they take it from. “Lucifer’s Hammer” by Larry Niven and David Pournelle does a good job of describing what civilization might well become when the electricity goes off and the fuel supplies are exhausted and not replenished. It is not a pretty picture. Only those without a lot of ethical baggage and a willingness to eat what or whoever is available will survive in such a world. The more isolated and prepared people will have the best chances.

I would go into the survival mode which means I have stores for 2 years + for such an event plus the needed defense weapons to protect our supplies. I have put away seed and necessary cultivation products for planting. I have a permanent water source. We live in a very rural area so the threat of scavengers will be small plus my 2 neighbors and I are in this together. It is no joke to us. We have made our plans and will sick by them .
