My yearling filly has a recurring abcess in a front hoof- any ideas?

She is stall kept and her food is monitored very closely- daily turnout in a sand ring. She is on a 10% sweet and oat mix with 1/2 orchard and 1/2 alfalfa 2x per day, for weight gain. Could it be a stress injury or growing pain? She’s 11 mos old and 14.2hh!

Talk to your Farrier, you don’t want it to get worse, and they would know best.

  2. well I honestly don’t know much about horses but I was raised around a lot of cattle. I am sure you have looked but you may see if there is a sliver of wood or something in under the skin or could possible be a small fracture.

  4. I had a bad stone bruise on my sole- it abcessed and blew out at the cornary band and then healed nicely. You might have some sort of puncture that won’t heal because it keeps getting re-infected. Maybe check into White Line Disease. I would farrier and vet check – a horse is only as good as his feet.

  5. Try soaking it in epsom salt at least once a day. My vet has an iodine mixture of sorts he calls hoof hardener- see if your vet has something like that and apply it once a day.

I would see if there is a more open area to keep your filly in. Stalls are not sanitary and could be contributing to the recurring abcess. It sounds like you are not sure it is an abcess??

If you have some hoof testers you might be able to eliminate weather or not it is actually in the hoof. If it is an abcess, the epsom salt soak should bring it out. Your vet also might recommend sulfer tabs for an abcess.

    Experience.
