@katzcradul Katz, it sounded like all the canneries were going to close the canning portion. From what I was told they have been having issues and will only sell via their welfare store. I am not sure if it will be open to non memebers. They were telling me that just to open their grain silo they have to pay $8,000.00 because it is a “hazard” to the environment because it makes a wheat cloud. Just several red tape issues like that across the board.
@ssamorgan2044 I ordered some shelf stable milk recently fro Dollar Tree online, they shipped directly to my store for free……it was a dollar a quart, but I heard that it was being discontinued. You could look online at Dollar Tree, it is the cheapest I have seen it.
@QueensCabinet We do good to finish a half gallon before it expires. : ) Having powdered milk on hand has been a big money saver. I use it for cooking instead of buying fresh milk which we probably wouldn’t finish. I’m going to try the shelf stable milk soon to see how that works for us.
@minbound Making hay while the sun is shinning. The volunteers at the cannery said they are going to be closing soon. That they would be selling pre packaged product through their welfare office. Not sure if it will be open to the public when that happens. I bought stuff in bulk and dirt cheap to can. Heck Freedom probably bought a home canner and is setting up his own canning company in his garage. hahahaha
@LegendSexy Thanks, just showing what we are doing everyday. I hope you get ideas as I get plenty of great ideas from everyone here on youtube. Shelby
@ssamorgan2044 Vacuum sealing works good too, I do it with my dehydrated items all the time. You are right, I wouldn’t have to do much if I didn’t have all these men to feed. Just got back from the store with 8 gallons of milk, hoping it lasts through the weekend….. sigh…..
I live too far too but that was really interesting to see! I lived in Idaho Falls about 30 years ago and most of my neighbors were LDS. They were very generous and loving….big families and BIG hearts-3
Congrats on how much you were able to get done! I do not live near a cannery, nor do I have menfolk to help with the work. (but I don’t have to feed any menfolk, either) I have to stick to vacuum sealing my food storage. Keep up the good work and great videos! : )
I would love to do this too. My SIL and her family are LDS, so it shouldn’t be too difficult to set something up.:) Thanks, Shelby…I look forward to watching your videos.
@GrammyTammi the cans were 75 cents and lids were I think 10 cents. I understand that there is a tool that enables you to re use the cans 3-5 times with a new lid each time, but I haven’t personally done that. The LDS cannery prices for the cans is the cheapest I have found, even on line. Hooooraaaaayyyyy on the Winco. Shelby
Hi Shelby, nice video, thanks for sharing. I have a couple of questions… Around how much do the cans and the lids cost? Can you reuse the cans by using a new lid? Thanks! Oh, and on another subject… we’re getting a Winco here in Las Vegas!
Cool, thanks for sharing

@QueensCabinet Did you get the impression that it was just your local cannery that was closing?

Wow, that is great. I have a cannery 3 hours from me, but I haven’t been there yet. Trying to save up $ for the gas and purchases.

@see3ga We have three boys that helped with the canning, bought everything in bulk so we got it really cheap.
