I recently bought this wellness dog food “Old Mother Hubbard Wellness Super5Mix Lamb”
these are the ingredients:
Lamb, Menhaden Fish Meal, Oatmeal, Ground Barley, Ground Brown Rice, Rye Flour, Tomato Pomace, Canola Oil (preserved with mixed tocopherols, a natural source of vitamin E), Salmon Meal, Rice Bran (from brown rice), Tomatoes (natural source of Lycopene), Ground Millet, Natural Lamb Flavor, Flaxseed, Carrots, Spinach, Sweet Potatoes, Apples, Blueberries, Dicalcium Phosphate, Calcium Carbonate, Potassium Chloride.
My question is this, last night I posted a question and someone told me that WELLNESS isn’t supposed to be the only food fed to a dog – because it is pure meat and no vegetables??
Is that true? I don’t really see wild dogs eating too many salads these days! Heh! I’m not sure – but I wouldn’t have switched to a 60 dollar brand of dog food if I knew that it had to be supplimented with something else? …thanks for any insight!!
I didn’t realize that feeding my dog quality food was me falling for a sales pitch?? Weird!!
Wellness is a great food, you have to take advice from people here that actually know what they are talking about. In every post you will find people answering that don’t have a clue.

ANY decent dry adult feed is fine!
Only the poor feed-snobs,w/nothing else to brag about but,”I waste more money than you do-nyah nyah” fall for snake-oil sales pitches.
You’re feeding a pet-dawg,NOT a grizzly bear or entering the Iditarod next week.
All that crap is useless wasteful foolishness.

You can tell by your ingredient list the person doesn’t know what they are talking about.

If you want to play it safe, feed your dogs something with meat AND veggies. Dogs love a variety of flavors in their foods (I mean in one food. If you change their food type/brand too much, you can mess up their digestive system).

Dogs do love vegetables. Mine get pieces of carrots and canned green beans as treats. Most dog biscuits are very high in calories and cause dogs to be overweight. I had one that was 10 pounds too heavy after heartworm treatment ( he was a rescue) and due to being small, should not lose more than 1 – 2 pounds a month. half dry food and half green beans got him slim and trim in a little less than a year. Now he gets his feelings hurt if he doesn’t get green beans in his dish! Most dry food has corn as the first ingredient which is not the best food for dogs. I stay away from those. Meat or fish should be the first ingredient.

While I don’t feed commercial foods, and to be honest I think the high carb ones are almost as bad as the high grain, this is one I might consider feeding if I had no other option.
The people that told you that were either from the misguided ‘dogs are omnivores’ school of thought or those that try to justify feeding a corn based food.
** i just read your original question and the person that told you that you couldn’t feed it exclusively was talking through their bottom!! Pay more attention to bindi’s answer – she knows what she is talking about! Dogs DO NOT need fibre and vegetable matter – they cannot digest it and are just not designed for these foods.

The label states that it contains vegetables…I see tomato, carrots, spinach, sweet potatoes, and even fruits…apples, and blueberries. I have heard good things about this dog food, and have never heard that you need to supplement any other foods.

We don’t have that brand in Aus. but it sounds good. Has a lot of grains though but basic good ingredients.
Don’t pay attention to what many say on here. So many of them feed their dogs Pedigree because the marketing tells them it’s the best food for dogs. They get sucked in by expensive advertisements.
If Pedigree put half as much money into decent nutrition as they do into their marketing maybe their food would be of a better standard.
If people would read the ingredients as you did they would educate themselves about which food is good and ditch the rubbish they feed.

Wellness is a fine food to feed, good quality ingredients.
Yes, dog food DOES matter, just like it matters what you put into your body. You don’t have to buy the most expensive, but you shouldn’t buy crap either. Many low-quality dog foods are preserved with preservatives that have been linked to cancer, such as BHA, BHT, or ethoxyquin. I have yet to know anyone that shows in conformation and feeds their dog a food like Kibbles and Bits or Always Save, that’s like if you ate McDonalds every day, it’s not good for you!
You can find good quality food for a cheap price tag. Canidae and Chicken Soup brand are both about $1 per pound. Kirkland (from CostCo) is about 50 cents a pound.
I stick around the 5-star foods from http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com/dog_food_reviews/ . 4+ stars is good. I find the 6 star foods too high in protein for my dog.

First of all it isnt all meat..read the ingredients..2nd, your dog doe snot need veggies and fruit ..it needs MEAT..protein, fat, some grain..oats are good..
However, feeding lamb only is NOT healthy, it is not meant to be fed all the time and can cause liver problems.
And yes, there is way to mych hype about feeding all these expensive brands. People like to make us feel guilty..sorry I don’t…
My dogs get what they need, look great and live long lives. my dogs lived on attaboy and dog chow and lived as long as 17 years..they were large hound dogs!
If you want to feed your dog a 60.00 dog food, then IMO your a complete fool for falling for all the crap people like to feed us.. The pet food industry is getting rich off fools who fall for the hype…

Wellness is an awesome food. Dogs by nature eat meat, they just happen to enjoy an occasional vegetable. (Coming from someone who had to move the garden to where the dog can’t eat it this year.) Usually veggies are added as a way to add a couple vitamins. Whoever told you that you shouldn’t feed it straight is full of misinformation.
Check out : http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com/
you will find wellness in the 5-6 star foods, which is top of the line.

Any Food Dog food People food whatever has a nutritional list on the side of the bag. Compare the nutrient lists. Even in YOUR food you will sometimes find that the Generic might have less sugar & more fiber than a pricier name brand.
Dog food that is really cheap my have corn instead of brown rice but READ the BOTTOM line: the Nutrient List.
Walmart makes a Generic of EVERYTHING even puppy chow, does you dog NEED blueberries? NO but they might benefit from antioxidants, does it have to come in a $60 bag of dog food? NO Sweet potatoes? Carrots? Tomatoes? Just do what you think is best & that you can afford. Just keep in mind that Food colouring & SALT are BAD for them. Again read the Nutrition List. & Compare the Absorbed nutrients.

Wellness is a good food. Keep feeding it.
In order to be marketed as a dog food, which Wellness it is. It must meet certain standards both in nutritional content and labeling guidelines.
The person who said that last night had no clue what they were talking about.
Wow, I just re-read that answer you got last night, and found even more bogus info there. Guar Gum if it was to be used in kibble at all, would be in your crap brands of food. I have not come across one kibble yet that used that as a binding agent.
Typically the grains and vegetable matter found in kibble are the binding agents. This is why even your top quality brands will have some form of plant in them. Without it the kibbles wouldn’t stay kibble shaped. All binding agents are not created equal though.

Nothing wrong with that formula at all, there is plenty of “salad” in it, but yes dogs do need the “salad” as well as meat.
22% protein is hardly indicative of all meat.
HOWEVER, the dog food market is understandably very competitive, and there is enough creative marketing out there to choke a horse.

“Typically the grains and vegetable matter found in kibble are the binding agents.”
Yes some is formulated to work as a binding agent, but it is first and foremost there for it’s nutritional value. A dogs nutritional needs CAN NOT be met by only meat products.
“causes a condition known as secondary hyperparathyroidism.
Recognized clinically for many years in dogs fed meals consisting
mainly of meat, this disease results in major bone loss, skeletal
abnormalities, and pathological fractures.”
