Meat Meal vs. Chicken Mean/Turkey Meal in Cat Food?

I saw a show that meat meal is worse then by-products and are dead pets euthanized from the vets office and road kill. Now Wellness CORE has these ingredients;

De boned Turkey, De boned Chicken, Chicken Meal, Whitefish Meal, Potatoes, Salmon Meal, Natural Chicken Flavor. Chicken Fat (preserved with Mixed Tocopherols, a natural source of Vitamin E), Tomato Pomace, Cranberries, Chicory Root Extract, Salmon Oil, Flax seed, Vitamins (Vitamin E Supplement, Niacin, Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C), Thiamine Mononitrate, Calcium Pantothenate, Riboflavin, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Beta-Carotene, Vitamin A Supplement, Vitamin D-3 Supplement, Folic Acid, Biotin, Vitamin B-12 Supplement), Choline Chloride, Minerals (Zinc Proteinate, Zinc Sulfate, Iron Proteinate, Ferrous Sulfate, Copper Sulfate, Copper Proteinate, Manganese Proteinate, Manganese Sulfate, Calcium Iodate, Sodium Selenite), Yucca Schidigera Extract, Dried Kelp, Taurine, Lactobacillus Plantarum, Enterococcus Faecium, Lactobacillus Casei, Lactobacillus Acidophilus, Rosemary Extract.

The thrid ingredient is chicken MEAL is that bad or good. It can’t be a dog or cat from the vet cause it says chicken meal but what is it?

Is Wellness CORE cat food really good food I should feed my babies or should I switch???

  1. Big clookies

    “Chicken Meal
    As the chicken cooks, all of the fat and water are released, creating a concentrated, highly-digestible protein and fat source. For our cat foods, we source and select special low-ash chicken meal as to control mineral levels that contribute to proper urinary health. Wellness uses naturally preserved meat sources.”

  2. Not sure what television show you were watching was full of incorrect
    information. This is cruel.I would email Wellness and find out what
    byproducts are used.Good grief! These ingredients are worse than
    the garbage the food makers ask humans to put in our bodies.

  3. There is often some confusion regarding meat meals.

    NAMED meat meals (such as chicken meal, turkey meal, etc) are absolutely fine ingredients for pet foods. Chicken meal, for example, is basically dehydrated chicken. It is nutrient-dense and an excellent, digestible protein source.

    Now, meat meals that are listed as by-product meal are another story. For example: if you read chicken by-product meal on the side of a package, you would know that it was chicken beaks, feet, guts and other byproducts dehydrated. This is not fit to be added to pet food, because byproducts are very poor protein sources. I don’t know what show you watched that tried to tell you that by-products are worse than named meat meals, but I would pay it no mind.

    Meat sources that are NOT identified are ingredients to avoid at all costs! For example: if you saw Animal Liver or Animal Fat or just the word “Meat” on the side of a package, it could very well be euthanized dogs/cats, roadkill or dead zoo animals. You always want to watch out for undefinable meat sources. Never buy a food that contains it.

    Anyway, that said, Wellness CORE is an excellent quality food. Chicken Meal adds more protein and nutrients to this high-protein, low-carb food. I feed Wellness CORE myself and find it to be excellent. My girls are at their correct weights, have shiny coats and have gained some wonderful muscle tone.

    Finally, it’s refreshing to see somebody concerned about what goes into their pet food!

    Here’s some recommended reading regarding pet food labels. This website is geared toward dog food, but you can apply the same rules to cat food:

    Good luck. :)
