Questions about switching from urban life to life in the wild.?

Hi, I’m tired of the modern materialistic world and would like to venture into the wild. I will be living in a tent and off of whatever I can pack in my hiking framed backpack. I’d like to be far away from civilization and near a water source, caves, and plenty of trees/plants. I am an avid outdoors man and do possess survival skills. I plan on living the rest of my life in nature. I live in Southern California and would like to know the following:

Where is the closest large forest to me where I could possibly do this?
Is there anything special I should know about this place?
I have about $500 to spend, what should I get to prepare myself?

Please include any other comments that may help me in my new beginning.
Yes, I have seen and read the book and movie Into the Wild. There’s not much going for me in life right now. I’ve been laid off, divorced, and robbed in the last year. I am certain of my choice and would like to continue the remainder of my life where I love: The Outdoors. Please contribute to my question or otherwise not contribute with your negative opinions.

That sounds awesome. I would love to do something like that but I’m just not brave enough :( Read the book Into the Wild. It’s not that informational but it’s really intriguing/ inspiring and I think you would like it. Have fun

I can answer one question for you, buy a pocket knife, a pot (for cooking), and some blankets. You could also bring a weapon, in case a bear or something like that tries to kill you.

  6. Well, if by wild you mean the desert. Be sure to bring a rain coat, rain boots, and other leather belongings you may have in your house hold. Also make sure to wear these items at all times while traveling on donkey-back, for the horny dolphins will swoop up from beneath the ancient desert, and scew your ass. Quite aggressively might i add. Make sure to yell loud enough for the native people to here your call, and they will poop on you while tieing you to a bed. Be prepared! You will die most likely. If you don’t you will be miserable.

  7. First off, you should know everything there is to know about surviving before you even atempt to go in the wild. You shouldn’t have a tent, if you do find a forest where thats enen possible you won’t want to make yourself noticible. you want to be hidden from other humans. Ditch anything man made, get some flint and earn how to use it. Learn to fish without a fishingpole and skin (oh yeah, get a survival knife) your going to need tough clothes because its going to get rough.

I’m not even sure if your serious, bu if it works out I’m doing that too. People piss me off, theyre so stupid!!! Destroy this planet, and theyre working on destroying space too. then like theyre oblivious to the damage they do they scream HUMANS ARE THE BEST SPECIES EVER yeah right. and slugs are the fastest animal in the world….anyway good luck! (if your serious)
You should read my side of the mountan. its not informational but at the same time it is. it’s old so it gets boring at some parts but its what got me thinking about running into the wild. it might help in your case.

  8. Look up resources from the Army Corps of Engineers. They have maps of all kinds, which you will need once you figure out where to go. They may have resources for you as far as where to go too.

If you are an outdoorsman, then you should already know what you need. The fact that you have to ask this makes me think you have no clue what you are doing. What you are considering is very sobering and difficult. You should condition yourself long before actually doing it.

You must know what poisonous trees, plants, animals and insects are in the area you end up going. Taking things like magnifying glasses, freeze-proof compass, water-proof matches should be foremost in your list of things. It’s not easy….your life is 100% in your own hands, and dying out there would be a sheer misery…a hell on earth if you do things wrong.

You might need to know migration patterns of animals — fish, birds and land mammals. be prepared to eat insects, and foul-tasting plants. Also be prepared to skin animals and gut them for food, shelter and warmth. I skinned a groundhog once…when I was quite young. It was a VERY foul smelling animal. The scent was very oily and got all over my clothes and inside the pick-up truck I had. It stunk for months…and this after a full cleaning with detergent. I never knew it was like that. I found out the hard way. It was wicked rank.

Also…there’s no medicine out there. Not like you know it anyway. You’d need antibiotics, or at least a way to get them if you need them…and you will. One wrong move and you get cut and infected, and that’s it. It WILL progress to gangrene and that is a 100% guaranteed agonizing and lingering death.

Take a bible with you as well. You WILL read it.

    Consider yourself warned.

    Good luck.

Right on. I feel the same way. You are going to need much more than standard survival skills. You haven’t chosen a spot yet so I imagine you don’t know what plants and animals grow there.

Sierra national forest looks like the best spot in So Cal after a quick look at a map but you don’t want to be too far away at first. If you get lost and can’t find enough food starving to death is a really slow and painful way to die.You can’t be too dependent on items that you bring with you for example: If you bring flint and steel, what happens when the flint runs out? What do you do when your tent rips? Your clothing won’t last forever. Your boots will wear out in a couple of years. In fact, if you think about it, 10 years from now everything you brought with you will be mostly destroyed and you will be wandering naked through the forest. You will get lonely. You can actually go crazy from lack of social contact.

    How to spend Money?
You need a book about the native plants in the region you select.
A large amount of seeds to plant.
You need a good fixed blade knife and you need to know how to sharpen it.
You should take some classes on first aid and how to make things. The red cross has a wilderness survival training course for around $130 but they teach you how to get back to civilization so you can call for help. In your situation you may be so far away that a simple problem will kill you.

I think you would be better off with a small group trying to grow food. If you can collect seeds each year and protect them to plant next year you could have a guaranteed food source.

Make sure you think about everything before you go.
