  1. Everyone here is going to say Les. As will I. I admire Les in a sense because he goes out there on his own. Sure his crew is an hour away and he’s had to be extracted or whatever you want to call it a couple times. Like when he was in Labrador. But when his own crew almost got killed there I would think its time to pull out. Bear could kick my ass and both are survivalsits but bear has a crew and although they are not supposed to help him unless it’s life threatening I do know the stories where he would do something and than go to a resort for the night.

I would say both have honest points but which one os more realistic?

I’m not a survivalist. I read books and know things about building shelter, setting up a fire and how to keep it going, finding water (but I learned that from a guy who was in a concentration camp during the korean war), and some food procurment. but I have never put it into practice. I would need a dedicated desert survival course. It’s entertaining but I need something for my geographic location. Not forests, jungles, and frozen hellholes.

  2. I live in Alaska and can tell you both would be considered a cheechako and laughed at here.
Such shows are fine for entertainment and do have some tips for the clueless city slickers. However I know some old Alaskan sourdoughs both male and female that would put both those boys to shame when it comes to survival. Don’t think all you see on TV is the gospel I have seen the discovery channel give out incorrect info as well as those survival shows. Of the two Les Stroud is more of the real deal Bear Grylls is a phony.

What I would like to see is both of them camp in the muskeg of the interior here in a Alaskan summer. Why? Because I would like to see how they handle a massive swarm of mosquitoes and no see ums, so thick it has driven men to suicide. These swarms are so think they have suffocated horses by their shear numbers. Now that would be entertainment for Alaskans!

Ray Mears is more of a real survivalist as is Tom Brown.

  3. Almost everyone will say Les, and his show is more realistic. However, you need to give Bear credit he is the youngest man to ever climb Everest. That feat alone shows that he is more of a thrill seeker, his type of “survival” is like all the other extreme sports, done for shock value and danger.

  5. Les Stroud, he just seems less sensationalistic than Bear. Bear will scale cliffs and eat dead cow stomachs. Why? how does that help you survive. It just seems silly sometimes, no to mention the times he has been caught sleeping in hotels and whatever.

But yeah, the alaskan poster has some pretty good points regarding the alaskan wild. Muskeg is hell on earth. Regardless of who I was stuck with, we would be in a world of hurt tripping over hippie heads, falling in 7 foot deep trenches full of stagnant black water, and being charged by moose.

  6. Considering they found out that they sleep in hotels when not on camera, I’d say neither.

  7. man vs wild is fake. bear grylls has a crew with him and it even says that he receives assistance at the beginning of the show. he’s been found in hotels when he was supposed to be filming. some of his “survival techniques” are harmful. les stroud is real.

  8. Either way they will both die quick if they don’t cheat and bring defensive pistols capable of killing everything up to a bear, or in Les Strouds case a water buffalo.
