If an asteroid were destroyed before impact with earth why would it be ‘worse’ in smaller pieces?

Scientists say that the smaller pieces would collectively cause more damage. But if a large asteroid were destroyed, had to be destroyed (can’t deflect, months away not years from impact), before impact the very small debris would burn up before impact, the volatiles would spread away and not be part of the mass that impacts, the larger bodies would cause damage but don’t larger impacts cause more damage then smaller. Considering the depth of bigger impacts, amount of material kicked up, kinetic energy, tsunamis, antipodal upwellings, etc. All these things considered wouldn’t destroying a large asteroid be better?

Do you think that people will be as worried about 12/21/2012 as they were about Y2K?

I look at all of the questions on 12/21/2012 and have to wonder if that day will be as feared as midnight was on 01/01/2000? In preparation for Y2K, there were massive amounts of computer programmers hired to combat the potential for disaster, and many people were stockpiling food and other material goods in wariness of the potential disaster. Pat Robertson devoted several months of the 700 Club to news articles about we needed to be prepared. Even though the US was the most prepared, and we were warned that the damage woud happen due to massive computer failures, only minimal damage happened through the computer resetting. Y2K has gone down in history as one of the biggest false scares of all time as very little was affected, other than massive amounts of computer programmers being laid off after the project was over.

So, What are your thoughts? Do you foresee people fearing and preparing for 12/21/2012 in the same way as happened for Y2K. Not so much in the IT industry, as the population in general?

Is this a good idea for a Fallout 3 character?

I was going to make three character builds (Good, Neutral, Evil) and I thought to myself, “Why not an assassin for the evil character?” This was gonna be the profile I had the most immediate fun with, not worrying about the long run. Now, since I could never find any good assassin weapons that don’t break down when you fire twenty shots (please don’t suggest weapons, I just want to know if my idea is fine or not), I decided to go with unarmed, figuring the sneak attack criticals from the stealth mode would balance out with the base damage loss. During the good old G.O.A.T I picked Unarmed, Sneak, and Lockpick for my tag skills, and I maxed my intelligence for the most possible skill points. If I got perks like Silent Running, Iron Fist, Ninja, basically everything for stealth and unarmed damage, as well as survival perks like Mister Sandman, Night Person and Cannibal, and finally some critical perks like Finesse, would this setup work if I got the highest possible Sneak and Unarmed skills? (For the record, I picked Lockpick for my third tag skill so that I could break into peoples’ houses at night and kill them with Mister Sandman >:) ) Some advice from more experienced players would help, too. I normally get the hang of RPG’s quite fast, but this one’s a little different…
