What would happen if there were no more deserts?

I’m curious as to what everyone’s ideas would be. Scientifically the deserts are an important ecosystem, so what do you think would happen if we turned them all into farmland? I am looking for doomsday ideas. This is a worst case scenario that I haven’t come accress yet.
I’m talking about if the deserts could be made into farmlands, then what kind of problems would it cause to have it all turned into working farms. I’m envisioning problems with mineral depletion, over production of oxygen, and maybe say a “plant plague”

Would a vegan/vegetarian have to revert back into slavering carnivores in a outdoor survival crisis?

I watch survival shows starring these outdoor experts dropped alone (along with their camera crews) into swamps, deserts, snowdrifts, etc. and I notice that no sooner have they made fire/found water/made shelter than they’re looking for some nasty lizard/varmint/grasshoppers, etc. to kill & eat, either raw or burnt to a crisp, of course alongside the nuts/edible plants….

Would a vegan survivalist skip the critters altogether and just toss a salad?
(I messed up the grammar in the main question, I know- wasn’t paying attention)

Do you think Trees that grow 20 feet or more a year could be genetically engineered soon?

could trees like these be used to help reverse global warming by the fact they’d obviously have to consume CO2 very rapidly? Could they could be engineered so they wouldn’t require great deals more water then regular trees. Could they could be used for a natural resource allowing rainforests and other natural forests to be preserved. Could they be easily identified simplely by there level of growth to keep them from overtaking natural species of trees? Could they be used to reforest areas that have been clearcut and to reverse the spread of deserts? Is all this possible? I know that teqniques to add and remove genes have been recently discovered, is this one of the first areas it should be applied to especially since unlike genetically modified food, people don’t eat wood products? Just imagine trees as tall as redwoods in 30 or 40 years where previously there had been none.
