Is the Earth more likely or less likely to be hit by an asteroid or comet now as compared to, say, 20 million years ago? Several studies have claimed to have found periodic variations, with the probability of giant impacts increasing and decreasing in a regular pattern.

Suppose an asteroid of mass 6e20 kg is nearly at rest outside the solar system, far beyond Pluto. It falls toward the Sun and crashes into the Earth at the equator, coming in at an angle of 30 degrees to the vertical, against the direction of rotation of the Earth. It is so large that its motion is barely affected by the atmosphere.

I have been trying this equation and solving for T and have gotten wrong answers each time:
-sin(theta)*R_1*M_a + 2/5*M_e*R_1^2*(2pi/8.64e4) = 2/5M_e*R_1^2(2pi/T)
R_1: 6.4e6
M_e: 6e24
8.64e4 = how many seconds in an hour
yes sorry!!!!! its supposed to be -sin(theta)*R_1*V_impact*M_a + ………
ugh i cant believe i left that out

What impact does Trojan Asteroid have on planet Earth?
I’ve heard recently that our scientists have a new toy called the “Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider” (RHIC) on Long Island. It hurls oin particles at tremendous velocity that it could create mini black holes. According to some scientist this ion collisions MAY produce something called a “strangelet”, an uber black hole in the making, It apparently sucks in regular matter and turns it into ‘strange’ matter. Its grows so dense that it would eventually burrow itself to the core of the earth and will start to literally ‘eat’ the earth inside out. My question is, is this a REAL possibility, scientist goin loco and causing the end of the world as we know it with their new toy..?!
BTW the RHIC apparently cost 600mil to build, so the question of “will anyone fund such a project” is outta here. Also, France has got another one similar to the RHIC planned for 2007, bigger and more powerfull..

So when ever I look up 2012 I get end of the world stuff but I was wondering about the scientific side of it, a possible pole shift or the idea that the earth would be passing the equator of the galaxy, anyone know anything, please share
