hiking tips ?

hey i am 15,live in england and would love to get into some long distance hiking and mountain climbing. I love the outdoors, camping, being away from the materialistic soceity we live in, but in truth i have never done a really big hike before, bascally i was wondering what tips people can give me in terms of where to start(preferably in Europe near or in England) and what survival skills are reqired to become pretty prepared in future. Don’t get me wrong i am not totally new to this, i have done overnight hiking and camping before and i am fit, but i mean for a few weekS. Finally i really want to do the pacific crest trail, maybe when i am 18, after i finish school, i know i seem naive but how much experience would i need and how hard would it b. thanks a lot

Life in England (1900-1920s)?

Right now I work as an illustrator, but I would like to attempt to cross over into the world of writing. Being able to illustrate my own stories would be much more satisfying.

Currently I am conducting researching for my first project, and I was hoping someone here could suggest a few books or websites that would be good to check out.

What I need would be…
…stories of people’s lives during 1900-1920s.
…comparisons of technology back then compared to today, and for the technology that wasn’t around back then, what they used instead (for example, the lack of plastics would require different methods of preserving foods).
…overview of forms of travel, and what to expect while traveling
…world events and how they would have impacted someone living in England.

I am primarily concerned with Europe and Africa. Any suggestions of books or websites would be appreciated.

Please don’t provide wikipedia pages, those are easy enough to find on my own :]
I will be speaking with several elderly individuals who were in Europe during that time period, so these book resources are mainly to verify facts, and to expand the information I have to work with.
I know there had to have been people who researched this in the past, so hopefully somebody knows of a couple books those individuals may have authored.
