Family Home Evening Ideas: Emergency Preparedness

Looking for ways to teach your family about emergency preparedness?  Try these fun and easy emergency preparedness activities during your next Family Home Evening:

Identify safe places in the house and practice an earthquake drill.
Review fire safety tips and how to use your household fire extinguisher.
Practice evacuating the house as if there were a fire.  Practice evacuating from a few different rooms, especially bedrooms, in the dark as if you did not have power.
Head outside and talk with your neighbors about disaster plans.  Identify if neighbors have a special skill such as medical training or special tools such as work gloves and chainsaws to clear away debris.
Memorize family contact phone numbers, including your out-of-town emergency contact.
Check your emergency kits.  Where are they stored and do they have everything you need?  Some items in your disaster kits may have expired and need replacing.  Kids might have outgrown clothes or shoes in their emergency kits as well.
Learn how to shut off the gas and water to your house.
Check your food and water storage supplies.  Do they need to be rotated?  Are there foods your family no longer likes to eat in your stash?
Practice eating a meal without power or gas from your food storage supply.
Review First Aid, CPR, and AED procedures.  Where are your first aid kits and AEDs located?  Do your kids know how to call 9-1-1?
Discuss emergency meeting points, both the one outside your house as well as the one outside your neighborhood in the event of an evacuation.  Do your kids know where it is located and how to get there?  Do they have the address memorized?
Discuss what types of emergencies are more likely to occur in your area and how to appropriately respond.  Run mock drills.

How do I prevent my son from being taken from me by his mother who only wants to party EVERY NIGHT ,ALL NIGHT?

She never comes home in the evening . Only in the morning right before I go to work . She stopped picking him up from daycare & my providor can testify to that . I have 2 months in my calendar documented with the days she don’t come home & when she stays gone for 3-4 days at a time . The only reason she wants him is to get child support from me for him. I buy all of his food and clothes. I pay for his insurance. He has a savings account that she has never contributed to . She has another son that she ignored all his life that is currently in a correctional facility at the age of 14(13 when he was placed there by Charlotte police )She’s been suspended from her job for excessive tardiness because she’s too drunk to go to work . She’s had a brick thrown in her car for hanging on the wrong side of the tracks. Her 14 year old is in a gang & I fear for my baby’s safety, whether with his mom or his brother . I need a lawyer within my price range, but I will sacrifice to get custody of him.

Lost my 5 month old kitten, how to find her?

My 5 month old kitten got out of the house sometime Tuesday evening. I took off Weds to look for her. I searched an area about 1 square mile. Placed flyers in mailboxes and on cars. Placed a flier in the local supermarket that has her picture, also in the local gas station. I live in Ohio and right now the temperature has a high of 80 degrees and we had a brief period of rain last night. The topography is a creek valley so there are some hills and some light woods.

I searched the neighborhoold top to bottom and did my best in the woods, but there is a thick brush. I placed some of her items out on the patio for her to recognize. I’m worried that since she is only 5 months she doesn’t have a strong sense of direction or survival skills. She is still clawed however. I’ve checked with the SPCA and she isn’t there, I also put an ad on craigslist. I’m doing everything, but no luck.

Do you think she can survive? Do you think she has the right skills to find her way home? What could I do to do a better job at finding her.

She always tries to get out, and when she does she stays close by.
