CHAPTER ONE

“Are you questioning my professionalism? Are you implying that I am, to the nth, absolutely incapable of running this establishment?”
There was a long pause after Matron’s heated tirade.
“Yes, I know about the global economical crisis that it affecting everyone!” she snapped.
It obviously wasn’t just the said global economical crisis that was affecting her – PMS, Pissed-Off Matron Syndrome, was getting to her too.
Leina leaned in as close as she dared to the door that was slightly ajar.
Eavesdropping, she had learnt, very long ago, was one life-skill necessary for survival in this hell of a place.
“Our oldest resident is seventeen.”
Incredible. For once in her life, Matron had referred to her as a “resident” instead of with some other patronizing label.
“And how do you suppose we feed and clothe the other children? With scraps and rags?”
As if it isn’t already like that, Leina thought to herself with a glance down at her chemise that was practically moth-eaten.
She shifted herself to get a better angle of the room. Austere and pragmatic like the rest of the building, it was equipped with the bare essentials of an office. Matron sat at the table with an old-fashioned phone at her ear. She swatted at her frizzy hair in her usual hot temper and yelled some more obscenities into the mouthpiece. Any more up the decibel scale and Leina could swear, the other person would have their eardrums shattered. Behind matron was a cabinet that Leina planned, by any means, to get to later.
“We shall discuss this further then,” Matron said sharply and hung up. The clock chimed nine o’clock.
Bed-time. The race for either life or death.
Leina skittered down the corridor as quickly and quietly as she could before Matron could come out and scream “Rogue child at her!” – Not that she hadn’t on many occasions.
The door slammed and the click of Matron’s heels on the floor began to reverberate around the corridor. Clutching her glow-stick close to her, in case Matron’s eyesight had improved overnight (highly unlikely), Leina turned the corned and then climbed stealthily up the staircase. The yellow light of her glow-stick showed her a small puddle of water that was slowly dripping down the steps. Gross. Little Akira still hadn’t learnt how to control his bladder.
Taking care to avoid the three consecutive steps that creaked with the slightest touch, Leina took a massive lunge forwards and then scrambled up the remaining steps. She burst through the dormitory where a frenzy of children ran about, stuffing all their brightly coloured toys under their mattresses and clearing away any traces of the games that Matron frowned upon; dominoes, Monopoly, anything that was capable of brining delight.
“Quickly now! Into bed!” Leina hissed and switched off the lights. They all jumped into bed, ducked their heads under their blankets and squeezed their eyes tight-shut.
Silence. Not a sound. And then the dreaded three creaks came.
“NO NOISE OR YOU WILL ALL BE SENT AWAY!” Matron’s shrieking came like a blast from a bomb. All the children shivered in their skins.
Except Leina. She was sending herself away tonight.

After Matron had retreated to her own alcove (known because classical music was being played from her gramophone), Leina jumped out of bed and whisked the rug away from under her bed.
“What are you doing?” A little girl asked and sat up in bed. The other all children all followed suit.
Leina held the glow-stick up to her face “Do you really want to know? I am…releasing the monster…” She hoped her voice was scary enough to creep all the other children out. Half the children squealed and buried their heads under their pillows. Things would be easier if they were all gullible like that.
“There’s no such things as monsters,” the little girl said haughtily, “They don’t exist. You’re trying to get away.”
Leina ignored her and lifted up a loose floorboard where all her treasured possessions had been hidden. She pulled on a jumper and then shoved everything else into a Hello Kitty bag: a broken pen, a pirated copy of The Emancipation of Mimi which had been scribbled out to say Leina and a few bank notes.
Only one thing wasn’t there, the one thing that she had meant to take out first. Her fingers groped frantically around the pit and then there it was. It had almost escaped her reach. She yanked the locket away from the two floorboards where it got lodged in and clasped the necklace around her neck securely with a rush of relief.
“You’re going nowhere!” The little girl announced shrilly. She stood with her arms outstretched.
“Respect your elders, Junko-chan,” Leina said authoritatively. No commotion please, no commotion please.
“You’re not an adult so why should I? You’re three years away from being twenty, Leina.”
Canine mother! This little pretentious brat was barring the way out and totally devastating her chances of escaping this purgatory, this life of monotony
After I read some of your comments, thought I might post some notes up because it turns out that when I pasted the entire chapter, the whole thing didn’t turn out!

OK…..she hasn’t lived here her whole life. (It says later that she’s only been here 7 years, but that bit got chopped off by the word limit)

There is a prologue to this by the way so it would make more sense.

On the subject of the orphans…yeah, little Junko is shrewd, annoying, hmmm…..

thanks for your comments guys!

CHANGE THAT IS POSSIBLE, Opinions and feedback please.?

Now the idea that changes that is possible and reasonable and economically friendly and beneficial.. first and foremost thank you for taking the time to read what i have written for a idea in agriculture that 70 years old., It is CHANGE THAT IS POSSIBLE, it mite benefit all of us. Ushering in a new GOLDEN AGE. You have my vote because I believe in you, if I can help out in anyway I will. So here is the idea and thank you again to whoever reads this, please forgive my grammatical errors, and imagine the idea of this kinds of independence and appreciation that would grow from this. Now there would be taxes involved yes, but in the long-term wouldn’t it be beneficial to the next generation up and coming generations, and if weight it out, don’t we benefit in the long run by investing in them. i would love your options, tell me what you think and give your opions,

A Hydroponic Chemical Treatment and Distribution Plant

In every town or city, right next to the pre existing water supply and treatment Plant. it would recycle the chemical excess through the water filtration/treatment plant and put those recycled chemicals get ride of the root that broke off the plants, or hydroponic rocks, and clean the water and equalize the pH in the water supply. put the nutrient chemicals back into the hydroponic chemical plant where they separated and put into there own holding containers. After it has been feed into the sewage/piping to the apartments or houses. And the cycle keeps repeating. like it does with already preexisting water supply and treatment facility’s. that could help feed a populous during a time of crisis or out of good will.

Economic Boost, Higher Population, and New Jobs

when you build something BIG A whole new job trade and economic boost would occur. Through hydroponics and you produce a better plant though. Farmers could dedicate there fields could be feed the hydroponic solution for the crop, it would grow faster, and juicer. they could grow rarer foods, opening up new markets Farmers could dedicate more time to growing corn to make ethanol making gas cheaper, instead of growing already preexisting food grown by people in there homes or apartments. Or. It would teach a better appreciation of nature show the world that America is taking steps to solving hunger Better plants mean better health, increase in population.

Time of Crisis or Disaster

There are many benefits in desperate times especially now, If there ever was wide spread panic and a great economic depression occurred it would stop starvation amongst the middle class, millions would raid the local supermarket and clean them out. Or if a nuclear war happened and certain areas got hit and there is no way to get to the areas of food supply, you would have a decent amount of food growth for a city causing millions not to die.

Education System Idea

A gardening class in the school system for every age setup to teach people how to grow certain things. It would appreciation for nature and all life, it would teach survival skills also and many more ideas and a way to release stress.

Toxin Control

the plant would have checkpoint setup through out the city that would analyze the water within every city block. or area were the water would run through a filter to check to see if someone is tampering with the water supply by putting poisons into it to kill millions or to see if someone is growing something illegal, it the pipes could be analyzed by computers with the right software at certain locations, via Wii Fii and at the main control hub. The Control center would monitor the chemical readings and shut it off in case of a emergency, whatever it mite be, whether it is with a high amount of poisons chemicals by terrorist. Or if pipes break in certain areas and contaminates the water supply of middle Big Pipe (water) surround smaller pipes chemicals then a case of all of that, depending on the type of Climate like cold environments.

Why it wouldn’t Occur

Why I could see this not happening is because big wig or spiteful people who like to shoot down different ideas. that and certain corporation of farmers would lose money cause the consumer would now have the power, and they mite not want this to occur, I’m sure Corporate farming company’s have lobbyists in Washington D.C. except for themselves and there company’s, so they could maintain control instead of a community of real farmers, real people. And printing this idea out and giving to my town’s public officials and representatives. The domino effect has occurred now really 1 way or another I just want you if to please bring it up.

Conclusion

you have everything to gain and truly nothing to lose. You would usher in a golden age people would see if explained right that they would invest tax dollars to out of sheer benefits of the next generation.

If you believe in what i am saying if you can see and imagine it, then talk about maybe we ca
If you believe in what i am saying if you can see and imagine it, then talk about maybe we can make this dream a reality, because talking about a issue or spreading a idea can help push progress. people are near sighted most of the time so they need to be shown things up close to really understand. So please give me your opinions on this idea?

GOOD ESSAY, FEEDBACK PLEASE?

Within a person’s life, there are numerous responsibilities and goals the person wants to attain. These responsibilities and goals are called “rocks”. These rocks can range from the most important things in our life to a mere obligation you accomplish on a regular basis. In my life I have very many big, small and medium “rocks” to accomplish. My big rocks are education, family and friends, and the need to make a difference in the world.

Education is a big rock in my life because as an aspiring lawyer, I want to be successful. The key to success is education and self-power. Education is so important to me because it is such a powerful form of knowledge gain. It helps me build strong opinions and perspectives, it teaches me lessons that prepare me for the future, and it teaches me about the world around me. A goal I have set forth for myself is getting a scholarship to university. My dream is to go to Yale University in New Haven, U.S, because they have an absurd law program, rated number one for educational quality. From the first time I saw the school’s tall red-bricked tower with a tremendous silver clock, and the football sized field with its long soft-looking grass, I knew that’s where I want to be. I also like the idea of a big university because I like to study with other people and I don’t get distracted. It helps me develop speaking skills and prepare me so that I am twice as successful. Success is more important than people think; because I will one day need money to pay for food, shelter, clothes, health care and other financial needs. Success also helps you get more involved and make a difference.

After learning about the genocide going on in Darfur, Africa, I was determined to help the fight. Was the holocaust not painful enough? Did the world not suffer from enough hate and excruciation? Can you even imagine kids around 10 years of age so skinny you can see they’re bones carrying a baby and caring for it? Apparently the world hasn’t thought of that image. I quickly understood the harmful and distressed situation was not going to fix itself; I need to stick up for what I believe in. What I believe in does not include the Jewish religion, or that lottery tickets should be printed on 100% recycled paper, but it includes for say, the [RED] organization, and important charity causes such as cancer, poverty, Darfur, environment and orphanage needs. It is important to help make a difference because it makes our countries nicer to live in and people kinder and happier. Moreover, with the right path to success, I will have more power and connections to help. I hope one day I am able to help clean up communities and organize soup kitchens, and give shelter to the poor, but most importantly, to convince others to join in, bring their families and friends, and just have fun. Having family and friends is a personal big rock, and a must-have in Karin’s survival guide.

The third big rock in my life is my family and friends. This big rock is very important to me, and I will always cherish it. My family and friends are like the star to my burst. Without them, I wouldn’t be a very happy person. I am so grateful to even have these people in my life, as many do not, and even more grateful they care about me too. My friends and relatives set examples for me and footprints to follow in, and are amazing role models. For example, I would love to clone Vanessa’s social skills, but Farnaz’s determination and perseverance. I love Samantha’s funny and witty attitude towards everything, and wish to replicate Jasmin’s cool and collected sense of style. I am grateful to have my friends set models for me, and that my family is there to give me advice and help me move on in life. They are wonderful in supporting me, both financially and emotionally. It is such an important thing to have, and I care about my relationships very much.

I hope in 10 years you will see me, and I would be able to tell you about my many accomplishments, and how I left a positive mark on our planet earth, succeeded at university, and kept strong relationships with family and friends. I thank the writer of the story “The big rocks of life” and hope one day, I will have built a strong education and have the self-knowledge to write such a powerful piece. It was really touching.

Just in reply to Aki F’s response:
I’m in grade 8, so 12 years old.
I’m not exactly sure what the hook is what what uniform 3 is, so if you could explain that would be nice. Also, I know it’s pretty long and not arguing anything, but we were forced to write about this topic, so I didn’t have much of a say in this, and we had to have 3 main and 3 supporting points . So, it would be really helpful if you told me what uniform 3 is and what a hook is. THANKS.
