Polar reversal is it real? (the reversal of the earths magnetic poles)?

I was watching this program on the history channel about multiple ancient prophecies from different cultures and countries all over the world that say the world is going to end in 2012.

There was a segment where they were describing a phenomenon called polar reversal. What I got out of it is that when the planets align somehow the northpole and southpole will swap positions. but does that mean the whole earth will rotate for this to happen? The program said polar reversal will happen when the planets align in 2012 haven’t the palnets aligned before with out anything happening why would the alignment in 2012 be different?

The program was called “decoding the past:doomsday 2012″

I would really apprciate the insight from people who have valid answers.
the scientist on the program were saying that there is some kind of imaginery line in space and right now we sit below this but in 2012 when the planets align earth will rise above this line and that when the poles switch.

the line somehow designates the polarity of the planets.
does anybody know what this is called?

they also said something about having proof that alaska was once the north pole.

Target earth: the asteroid impact history of Australia – Dr Andrew Glikson, ANU

ANU Public lecture: Target earth: the asteroid impact history of Australia – Dr Andrew Glikson. This video was recorded at The Australian National University on 14 July 2010 and presented as part of the ANU Alumni Research Series. In this lecture, Dr Andrew Glikson discusses how large asteroid collisions have driven the evolution of Earth’s crust and how these impacts link to mass extinction events. The origin of several major episodes of volcanism, faulting, climate changes and extinctions can be traced to asteroids collisions with Earth. Australia has an excellent record of asteroid impacts dating back to the beginnings of Earth’s formation. Recent discoveries of large impact structures in Western Australia, including 359 million year old and 120km wide Woodleigh, 75km wide Gnargoo and 50km wide Mount Ashmore have shed light on the origin of past mass extinctions and climate changes. Dr Glikson is a Visiting Fellow with the School of Archaeology and Anthropology, Planetary Science Institute and Climate Change Institute. Dr Glikson graduated from the University of Western Australia and since graduation, has held positions as a Principal Research Scientist at Geoscience Australia, conducted extensive geological surveys in outback Australia, specialised in studies of the early Earth, the effects of asteroid and comets on terrestrial evolution and the origin of mass extinction of species. More recently, Dr Glikson has been studying the effects of climate on human evolution

What effect would comet bombardment have on the evolution of the primordial atmospheres on terrestrial Planets?

From the abundance of craters on the Moon and Mercury, we know that numerous asteroids and meteoroids struck the inner planets early in the history of our solar system. It is reasonable to suppose that numerous comets also pelted the planets 3.5 to 4.5 billion years ago. There must have been many large icy planetesimals in the Kuiper belt and Oort cloud that collided with each other, producing many large fragments, some that remain out there today. Those that lost a lot of energy during such collisions fell in towards the Sun and some peppered the inner planets with impacts. Much of the water that now exists on Earth, the water that was known to exist on Mars, and evidently the water existed for a brief time on Venus and Mercury were most likely delivered to these planets by these icy fragments.

(a) These impacts probably completely obliterated any atmosphere the planets might have had at that time.

(b) Comets are known to contain lots of organic hydrocarbons, so they probably generated thick atmospheres laden with organic polymers, much like the atmosphere of Titan.

(c) Much of the methane, ammonia and water vapor that marked the early planetary atmospheres also arrived on these fragments. Indeed, methane is broken down by ultraviolet light and hydrogen and nitrogen are released. The hydrogen usually escapes from terrestrial planets but the nitrogen remains in the atmosphere.

(d) They probably punched holes in the crusts of the planets causing natural gas trapped in the crust to be released.

(e) None of the above are likely.

Are there any respected militias in Florida I can join?

I’m 18 and going to college in Orlando next fall. I’m looking for a group that serves the community, trains in emergency preparation and survival skills, and has no history of intolerance or vigalante violence. Any ideas?
