Is it better to be a homeless bum in a city or a “Outdoorsman” in a rural area?

As my life spirals down, I will SOON and eventually have to sell person property for income, to live. Eventually that will run out. So, I have been thinking, in the worst case senario, I have already bought four books on survival when I lost my job. (I wanted to prepare for the WORST); “When All Hell Breaks Loose”, “Survival Wisdom & Know-How” and “Suburban – Urban Survival” (That book isn’t that great) “SAS Survival Guide” .

In a city environment, having lived in San Diego, Los Angeles and Hollywood, Ca. I know first hand in having to deal with various criminals, drug dealers, pimps & prostitutes, rapists (men that rape other men), drug addicts, violent mentally ill, gang bangers, over zealous police officers & Social workers, other homeless people competing for resources. I wasn’t homeless, but it wasn’t great either being around that element.

In a Rural and Semi-Rural areas, Living in those areas, I haven’t came across many Criminals, no gangsters or wannabe gangsters, violent types, drug dealers, etc. The most problem I would forsee is lack of resources, not a competition for resources. that is when Survival skills would be put to the test. Instead of squabbling with another homeless guy over a can of tuna, I would have to fish or hunt small game (Rats, mice, squirrels, rabbits, birds), recognize edible plants, have to deal with some wild animals (wolves, wild dogs, rabid animals), etc. Be careful not to tread on someone’s property because they WILL shoot to kill. Just because it looks abandoned, doesn’t mean it is abandoned, the property owner may just show up on his tractor.

Where to Move?….Life Changing Decisions…help.?

Where im located in the U.S. the cost of living is too high. My income is generated online which means I can do my work anywhere in the world. So I need help…WHERE DO I MOVE? Where can I benefit and live a good life? Where can I preserve my income the most?

Here are a few places Ive been thinking of In order from 1st choice to last:

1. Philippines (First choice)
2. Thailand
3. China (Getting expensive/Last choise)
4. Mexico (Last choice)

At some point I will want to purchase a house, but I understand that a few of these places will not allow me to own land, only own the house which is fine….BUT…. then there is property tax to take into consideration.

I found that FOOD would be cheapest in (Philippines)
Renting and buying property would also be lowest in (Philippines)
Philippines however I THINK, but I AM NOT SURE, CORRECT ME
IF IM WRONG, has one of the highest amount of property tax and is insane. I dont know the exact % can someone pls tell me?

Bottom line is If I choose to go to the PH I will have to consider pretty much renting my whole life? If I dont want to pay property tax that is.

Thailand would be the same as Philippines except that its about 40-50% more expensive to live there than PH. Upside to owning property is that property tax is 12.5% much cheaper than PH?

Many ppl say renting is the way to go rather than to buy a house, but then I piss away my money in away by renting because in the end I have no assets.

So…do I give up my dream of owning a house? Because I cant fathom paying $10,000/year or more in property taxes. Thats just like renting in a way..only this way you get to say you own it…and you can make any types of changes you want.

Legally is there any way around this? Are there places where I can just own a house clear free and not have to pay anything but water/electric?
Or something a long the lines of $2,000-$3000/year/less?

I didnt know owning a home could be more of a pain than a blessing.

Anyone have some good advice? Where to move, how to live?

Serious replies please…I do earn a good living, I just dont want to waste it all in america where it costs more to live. Where as my rent is $1000 for a 1 bed apartment, and in other countries can range from just a few hundred dollars for a 4 bedroom house.

Can I afford to have children?

My wife and i have been married for 8 years and we’ve been thinking of having children. We’re now approaching our mid 30′s so time is not on our side to wait. We live in California so it’s a struggle to survive even with a dual income. In fact we would not be able to afford our house, food, and other bills if my wife wasn’t working. If we have kids I don’t think it’s such a good idea to send them off to day care so my wife can work to pay for the day care and the remainder of our bills. We are not in debt, we don’t have cable or cell phone bills (etc) and my wife just finished with her Master’s degree so we stand to make quite a bit more money in the near future… if she plans to continue working.

How do people do it? Our house is small, our cars are old and I don’t want to work two jobs and not be able to spend time with my child. Do people take out loans to offset the mother’s lack of income? Should I sell my house and move out of state? HELP!

Can I claim this loss on my income tax?

We had to evacuate for hurricane rita. You are suppose to turn the electricity off before you leave. So we did…we were gone for 3 days and all the food in the fridge and deep freeze was lost. I figure the value at around $300. I put this down when I e-filed my return. If it is not acceptable will it slow down my refund?
