What is the quality of Diamond Naturals Dog Food?

I’m purchasing my first puppy soon (Springer Spaniel), and I know the importance of feeding a good quality dog food. I’m not in to the raw diets, just a good quality dry dog food. I used to work at Petco so I’m fairly familiar with what brands are good and what are not, but I am also on a pretty tight budget. I’d like to feed Blue Buffalo or Evo but I just can’t afford it.

What about Diamond Naturals? I believe we sold it at Petco; I’ve done a bit of investigating and it *looks* like a good brand for the price…

Ingredient list for small breed puppy formula (up to 45 lbs)-

Chicken, chicken meal, cracked pearled barley, chicken fat (preserved with mixed tocopherols), egg product, whole grain brown rice, beet pulp, fish meal, flaxseed, natural chicken flavor, fish meal, salmon oil (a source of DHA), potassium chloride, salt, choline chloride, yucca schidigera extract, vitamin E supplement, iron proteinate, zinc proteinate, copper proteinate, ferrous sulfate, zinc sulfate, copper sulfate, potassium iodide, thiamine mononitrate, manganese proteinate, manganous oxide, ascorbic acid, vitamin A supplement, biotin, calcium pantothenate, manganese sulfate, sodium selenite, pyridoxine hydrochloride (vitamin B6), vitamin B12 supplement, riboflavin, vitamin D supplement, folic acid.

I see no sweetners, dyes, chemical preservatives, or Menadione.
I am *fishy* about seeing “fish meal” listed twice, as well as “egg product” instead of just “eggs”.

Which brings me to another question… Would an adult Springer fall in to the large breed category? Average adult weight for a female is 45-50 lbs, but that seems to be the cut off between most small and large breed formulas…

Thanks!

Canidae vs. Natural Balance?

Right now I am feeding my two dogs Canidae. I live about an hour and a half away from any stores that sell it so I usually purchase it online. The site I get it from has, for some reason, increased the shipping and handling. I would pay $28 for the food and $24 for the shipping and handling. I love Canidae and don’t really want to switch, but that is crazy!! Anyway…the PetCo here sells Natural Balance. I have looked at the ingredients and they both seem excellent to me. I would just like a few more opinions. Here are the ingredients in both foods:

Canidae
Chicken Meal, Turkey Meal, Brown Rice, White Rice, Lamb Meal, Chicken Fat (preserved with Mixed Tocopherols), Herring Meal, Flax Seed, Sun Cured Alfalfa Meal, Sunflower Oil, Chicken, Lecithin, Monocalcium Phosphate, Potassium Chloride, Choline Chloride, Linoleic Acid, Rosemary Extract, Sage Extract, Dried Enterococcus Faecium, Dried Lactobacillus Acidophilus Fermentation Product, Dried Aspergillus Oryzae Fermentation Extract, D
, Dried Aspergillus Oryzae Fermentation Extract, Dried Bacillus Subtilis Fermentation Extract, Inulin (from Chicory root), Saccharomyces Cerevisiae Fermentation Solubles, Yucca Schidigera Extract, Mixed Tocopherols (source of Vitamin E), Zinc Amino Acid Chelate, Manganese Amino Acid Chelate, Iron Amino Acid Chelate, Copper Amino Acid Chelate, Cobalt Amino Acid Chelate, Vitamin A Supplement, Vitamin D3 Supplement, Ascorbic Acid (source of Vitamin C), Niacin, Thiamine Mononitrate (Vitamin B1), Riboflavin (source of B2), Beta Carotene, Calcium Pantothenate, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride (Vitamin B6), Calcium Iodate, Folic Acid, D-Biotin, Sodium Selenite, Papaya, Vitamin B12 Supplement.
Natural Balance
Chicken, Brown Rice, Lamb Meal, Oatmeal, Barley, Duck Meal, Potatoes, Carrots, Chicken Fat (preserved with natural mixed tocopherols), Tomato Pomace, Natural Flavor, Canola Oil, Brewers Yeast, Salmon Meal, Salmon Oil, Whole Ground Flaxseed, Potassium Chloride, Choline Chloride, Taurine, Spinach, Parsley Flakes, Cranberry, Lysine, L-Carnitine, Yucca, Kelp, Vitamin E Supplement, Iron Proteinate, Zinc Proteinate, Copper Proteinate, Ferrous Sulfate, Zinc Sulfate, Copper Sulfate, Potassium Iodide, Thiamine Mononitrate (Vitamin B-1), Manganese Proteinate, Manganous Oxide, Ascorbic Acid, Vitamin A Supplement, Biotin, d-Calcium Pantothenate, Manganese Sulfate, Sodium Selenite, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride (Vitamin B-6), Vitamin B-12 Supplement, Riboflavin (Vitamin B-2), Vitamin D-3 Supplement, Folic Acid (Vitamin B).
So far I have looked at about 5 online providers and they all have around the same price on shipping and handling. It’s really not too bad when you think about how long a 40 lb bag lasts us.

Is PETCO Original Puppy Biscuits OK to give to my puppy?

I’m currently training my puppy with PETCO Original Puppy Biscuits. After learning about dog’s food and switching from Purina/Iams to Wellness, I want to pick the best dog treat too.

This is the ingredient list for PETCO Original Puppy Biscuits:

Wheat flour, wheat middlings, chicken, chicken fat (preserved with mixed tocopherols), chicken meal, tomato pomace, salt, titanium dioxide, potassium chloride, choline chloride, taurine, biotin, zinc proteinate (a chelated source of zinc), ferrous sulfate, zinc sulfate, vitamin E supplement, copper proteinate (a chelated source of copper), copper sulfate, niacin supplement, manganese sulfate, manganese proteinate, (a chelated source of manganese), sodium selenite, selenium yeast, d-calcium pantothenate, vitamin A supplement, riboflavin supplement, calcium iodate, vitamin B12 supplement, vitamin D3 supplement, pyridoxine hydrochloride, thiamine mononitrate, folic acid.

So is the above ok(healthy) to give it to my precious puppy on lojack? If not, why and any recommendations?

thanks!
