Life science question!!?

When a cell is placed in water that contains a large quantity of dissolved substances such as sugar or salt, the cell will shrivel up and die. Explain why food can be preserved by putting it into honey or brine (very salty water).

Can I still can green beans without a pressure canner?

I accidently made too large a quantity of baby food and wanted to preserve the extra. Can I use a covered pot as a pressure canner or do I have to go buy a pressure canner?
