How can I get involved in survival training?

I’m 22, somewhat healthy, male. I’ve taken a semester off from college and find myself with little to do besides work and day to day stuff.

I think that this would be a great opportunity to learn some useful skills (as in- not related to political science or economics (my major and minor). I’ve recently become interested in survivalism and sustainable living. I also think that intensive first aid would be a most excellent skill to have, and rifleman ship. Id’ also like to know how to fix a car; essentially all of the things my dad should have taught me about self-sufficency, but was too busy at work to actually teach me.

Instuctor is disputing that I attended a college survival skills class and has given me an F???

College Survival Skills is mandatory at the college I attend. I took this class in my first semester, over a year ago. I never looked up my grade because this was supposed to be a FLUFF class and all that was required for an A in this four day course was perfect attendance. Today when I signed up for Fall semester it was brought to my attention that I recieved a failing grade in the class. I thought this may have been a clerical error and went to meet with the instructor. She had marked me absent on the second day of class. I attended every day of the class and I have fellow students to vouche for my presents in class on this day. The instructor tells me that I should have came to her before and there is nothing she can do to change the grade now…Is this true? Do I have to shell out my hard earned doe for this class AGAIN? Do I stand a chance if I go to the dean?

I’m going to retake Spanish in the fall of 2008. (I need four semesters in language for my bachelor’s degree)

Details: in this spring semester I took some quizzes on verb conjugation and did poorly on them. (I have since decided to drop the course and retake it in fall of 08) this semester it just seemed like I was thrown into the fire midyear with Spanish. I took two years of French in high school, but I want to learn Spanish if I am required to learn a language because so many Mexican-Americans and other Americans speak it Spanish is very practical. (In my free time I would like to learn French and maybe German) as far as Spanish goes I have the Berlitz learning system (a present my parents bought me for Christmas- the question I have is Berlitz only good for acquiring beginning language skills and tourists who need to know simple “survival” phrases? Is there advanced portion of Berlitz that has more of the things one would learn in their second, third, and fourth years of studying a language. (My guess would be no but correct me if I’m wrong.) I want to learn as much language as I can next
summer so I will be better prepared to learn Spanish in the fall. What are some websites that I could go to that would have anything from beginning to advanced in Spanish. I will probably still use Berlitz but I need some other things to supplement that. Any help is appreciated.
