How did early Western American settlers preserve food, other than salting, dehydrating, pickling, smoking.?

I imagine it had something to do with cellars/caves, but I can’t find any information with which to verify this.

First few weeks of pregnancy, what should my girlfriend be doing?

She’s given up smoking and drinking, but as she has an important job she can’t go to the doctors for a few days. Is there anything else she needs to do? Any foods to avoid etc.

How do I dry and salt fish to preserve them?

Does anybody out there ever dry and salt there fish to preserve them? If so, how do you fix them when you are ready to use them. I have heard of the Norwegians and Italians drying cod fish and the Native Americans drying Salmon. I do not have a clue how it is done but I have been getting fish that I want to use over the winter and want to try something other than just freezing and smoking them. My food dehydrator or oven is too small for the amount I want to do. Thanks.
