Beyond Shelter: Architecture and Human Dignity

Across Africa, Asia, Latin America and the United States, groundbreaking work is being done by small teams of outstanding professionals who are helping communities to recover from disaster and rebuild, bridging the gap that separates short-term emergency needs from long-term sustainable recovery. Questions about the role and responsibility of architects in disaster recovery have been circulating since the Indian Ocean tsunami killed more than 200,000 people in 2004. In the last decade, 200 million people have been affected by natural disasters and hazards. Ninety-eight percent of these victims are in the developing world, where billions of dollars in aid are absorbed annually by climatic and geologic crises. Those in the developed world are not immune, as extreme temperatures, intense heat waves, increased flooding and droughts expose vast numbers of people to the experience of the eco-refugee. Beyond Shelter is a call to action. It features 20 generously illustrated reports from the field, written by the founders of some of the world’s most provocative architecture and engineering firms and studios (Arup, Estudio Teddy Cruz, Urban Think Tank); accomplished nonprofits and research centers (Architectes de l’Urgence, Article 25 Development and Disaster Relief, the Institute for Sustainable Solutions at Portland State University, Development Workshop France); and leaders of such prominent organizations as the Red Cross, UN-Habitat and the World Wildlife Fund. All of these people are on the frontlines of disaster prevention and recovery, in rural and urban areas alike. Beyond Shelter presents projects in such diverse locales as Manila, New Orleans, Gujarat, São Paulo, rural Vietnam, Kashmir, the Gola Forest in Sierra Leone, Greensburg, Kansas and the village of Soba, outside Khartoum. Together they illustrate the reality that evolving risk requires new ways of thinking, and that architects have a leading role to play.

Why do obese girls hook up with skinny loser dudes, then get on tv to complain about being abused/cheated on?

Huge girls in tent outfits, or revealing, hideous outfits, from blond to braids, all colors, the same old story: she’s fat n sweaty, and then she births little Orcas from some loser who beats her or cheats on her, and she can’t understand why she’s getting nothing from him but more babies. It’s obvious she eats fast food all day, along with her sisters, mother, aunt, and friends. And the dude is usually some ex-con, or thug, or almost homeless looking dude. Not a single year of school beyond senior high between the two so-called adults. Is this, like, the only Americans left to see on tv, and if so, why do we have to see it, like, everyday?

A good outdoors hiking/backpacking hammock?

I am planning this massive backpacking trip across america, most of which will be spent in a wilderness survival sort of thing. (To really test my bush craft skills.) I have a tent, but I only planned on using it in impending rain. So I thought a portable hammock would be a nice way to camp. The problem is that I hate going through google trying to find one… So if you could give me a link to a good one, preferably military style, that doesn’t have to steep a price, that would be great. Five stars to the one I decide to buy.

Questions about switching from urban life to life in the wild.?

Hi, I’m tired of the modern materialistic world and would like to venture into the wild. I will be living in a tent and off of whatever I can pack in my hiking framed backpack. I’d like to be far away from civilization and near a water source, caves, and plenty of trees/plants. I am an avid outdoors man and do possess survival skills. I plan on living the rest of my life in nature. I live in Southern California and would like to know the following:

Where is the closest large forest to me where I could possibly do this?
Is there anything special I should know about this place?
I have about $500 to spend, what should I get to prepare myself?

Please include any other comments that may help me in my new beginning.
Yes, I have seen and read the book and movie Into the Wild. There’s not much going for me in life right now. I’ve been laid off, divorced, and robbed in the last year. I am certain of my choice and would like to continue the remainder of my life where I love: The Outdoors. Please contribute to my question or otherwise not contribute with your negative opinions.
