So. is your job safe?

Im already laid off and I dont see my type of work ever reaching its former levels, So I doubt I will ever go back to it. With unemployment levels rising and being expected to get even worse, what are we all gonna do for work. I live at the old family home, that has been paid for for many years, so Im not worried about losing the house, like many more people may, but I think things are going to get a lot tighter before we see any new prosperity. Some more of our family may have to move back here, too, if things get worse, and thats ok, but how far it is going to go. do you think we will revert to the levels of poverty like the great depression of the 30′s My Mom was a child when that happened, and barely remembers that, but through those lessons learned to get a house paid for, Thank God for that! Luckily we all have construction skills, and that type of practical knowledge, so we can make room for more of us if need be, and a big garden plot in the back, and a small orchard, and havent forgotten how to can and preserve foods, etc. We may need it. How are you doing? are you set up?
No, construction was not my main employment, just something I have done quite a bit of, as an employee, and for myself. One of my Brothers was mainly in construction, tho, and was hit hard by this,
I am way burnt out on what I did, and dont want to go back to it, anyway. I will find or create something new for myself.
I am seeing a future in alternative energy, maybe small affordable home kits, Small acreage developements, on cheap bare land, with solar, wind, etc, tied into that. Stand alone farmsteads, maybe. that could be sold for a fraction of currant prices.

Do you support the continual federal extentions of unemployment insurance?

I was watching FOX News and noticed that there were quite a few Republicans and Conservatives who do not believe that Congress should spend money we do not have (borrowed from China), to extend unemployment insurance. They say the job market is improving and that the standard 26 weeks is enough to determine if there is a market for your skills. With federal and State funded extension, people in some States are able to collect unemployment for up to a full year.

The Republicans on Fox News said that while they felt bad for the unemployed, they felt that in many cases people were holding out and not getting a survival job to make it until the economy improved and the extended coverage actually made the unemployment rate higher because people could afford to be picky. They said that if the person could not find a job in 26 weeks why would they find one in 52 weeks. The Democrats said that there were no jobs to be found and the people should be able to collect unemployment insurance until the job market improved. (That could be years in some communities)

I discussed this with my husband and we agreed that in many cases if the unemployment insurance were cut off for these people they would find a job, but because they could collect for up to a year, most hold out for something that fits their past experiences.

What do you think? Does the ability to collect unemployment insurance for up to a year, encourage laziness and actually increase long term unemployment?

Can you completely lose your unemployment if you take a temp job?

Ok, I was employeed at a company for 5 years and it completely closed forcing me to go on unemployment. I have never been unemployeed since the day I’ve been able to work at 16. It’s been about 9 months now of trying to find a job. I apply to everything and just cannot get a job. I even went back to school to brush up my skills during this ordeal. Now I just need a job even more for survival. In sheer desperation I applied at a temp agency. Ive been offered a 2 week job that starts in a few weeks. But now Im being told of all these horrible things like I will lose unemployment and be stuck in the temp world of waiting for jobs! I am freaking out, cause although unemployment was tiny compared to what I normally made, I made it work. But if I lose all income…Im screwed. I could last a week or so if it took that much time for unemployment to start back up after the 2 week job. But if after that 2 weeks, Im faced with nothing and no job prospects, I don’t know what to do. I have kicked the job search into high gear this week, with the hope of landing a job before I sign the final paperwork for this 2 week job. The worst part is I just dont know if Im making a terrible decision because I’ve never did temp work before. Does anyone have any words of advice? Im grown but I feel so freaken confused and sad :(
